The artist indulged in memories and depicted in the painting a landscape of a pasture, where a boy helped a shepherd graze a herd of cows. The painting shows the moment when enraged cows were driven into a canyon from the heat of the scorching sun and the unbearable bites of an attacking horde of hungry gadflies. In the canyon, the rocks and the cave concealed a saving coolness. And at the same time, the towering lonely rock carried a terrible threat of collapsing at any moment and covering everything that would be below it. The fear instilled by the avalanche of the enraged herd and the fear of a possible collapse of the lonely rock did not prevent the brave boy, who was under the terrible rock, from directing the cows towards the cave.
